Bentley announced their entrance into the SUV market on July 23, 2013. After building much anticipation for the uber luxury truck, Bentley officially unveiled the name Bentayga in January, 2015. The name was inspired by Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snow forest, and is composed of the the first four letters of Bentley and an altered spelling of Taiga. Bentley also drew inspiration from the rugged peak of the Roque Bentayga in the subtropical Canary Islands.

Bentley invested over £800 million and hired 1,000 additional workers during the development and production of the vehicle.1) Bentley hopes to sell 3,000 to 4,000 copies during the first run. CEO Dr. Durheimer has stated that early customer indications are for 3,500-4,000 units for the initial run.2) Production will begin on November 27th, 2015. The first Bentayga has been reserved for the Queen of England, who it is said will use it instead of a Range Rover at her estate.

It will be built on the Volkswagen Group MLB 2 platform, which is also used by other VW SUV's including the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and the Volkswagen Touareg. The body shell will be manufactured at VW's Bratislava Plant in Slovakia where the other Volkswagen Group SUVs are built. However, according to an agreement reached with the British Government, assembly and production of the Bentayga will be completed in Crewe. 3) 4)

The Bentayga is similar to the EXP 9 F concept vehicle, however, the final product took on many of the styling language from the current Continental GT & Flying Spur models.

The 2016 Bentayga launched with Bentley's all new 6.0l twin-turbo W12 TSI. The W12 TSI is flex fuel compatible, features displacement on demand, and puts out 600 horsepower and 663 lb. ft. of torque. The Bentayga can accelerate to 60mph in 4.0 seconds and has a top speed of 187mph. Bentley has proclaimed that it is the world's fastest SUV. 5)

For the 2018 model year, Bentley announced a 4.0l V8 with tri-charging from a pair of turbochargers and an electric supercharger that takes advantage of the Bentayga's 48V electrical system. Like it's relative the Audi SQ7, the Diesel Bentayga is not to be sold in the U.S.

In addition to being the first Bentley with a diesel, the Bentayga is also expected to be Bentley's first production hybrid. The hybrid is expected to be a plug-in hybrid, also a first for the company. The electric motors will be supplemented by a V6 or V8 gas engine, details of which have yet to be announced. 6)

In addition to being the fastest, it is also the most expensive SUV on the market. Pricing begins around $229,000 with well optioned Bentaygas costing $300,000 USD. It will go on sale globally as a 2016 model. Deliveries to European customers began in March, 2016. When the first Bentaygas are delivered in July, 2016 to the US, they will be 2017 models.
